SCOTUSblog, the Lawrence Times, and Politifact are among the winners of the 2022 American Journalism Online Awards, given by New York University’s American Journalism Online Master’s Program.
The American Journalism Online (AJO) Awards were established in 2021.
“With the AJO Awards, we want to draw attention to some of the great work being done by journalists and publications that live outside the mainstream,” says Adam Penenberg, founder and director of the AJO program, part of NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. “We aim to honor impactful reporting and vivid storytelling as well as celebrate the many ways today’s journalists inject humor, voice, and ingenuity into their work.”
Other winning online reporting includes the City’s detailed quiz helping New Yorkers match themselves to a mayoral candidate, Insider News’ Twitter thread about missing and murdered Indigenous people in Wyoming, and Knock LA’s series investigating gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The awards are determined by judges drawn from the profession who each select a winner for a specific category. These include Brian Stelter, former host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” (“Best Media Criticism”), Chao Li, head of product at Dow Jones (“Best Data Visualization”), Anayansi Diaz-Cortes, senior reporter and producer at the Center for Investigative Reporting (“Best News-Based Podcast”), Jason Leopold, investigative reporter at Bloomberg News (“Best Use of Public Records”), and Chenjerai Kumanyika, assistant professor at the Carter Journalism Institute and part of the Podcasting and Audio Reportage faculty (“Feature Most Likely to Inspire Future Journalists”).
