At the institute Simulation of Reactive Thermo-Fluid Systems (STFS, www. stfs.tu-darmstadt.de) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, a position for

Research Assistant/PhD Student (all genders)

is to be filled as soon as possible in a temporary employment for 3 years.

In fire safety, chemical inhibition of combustion processes is essential for slowing down the spread of fire or suppress it completely. To inhibit the fire spread and extend escape times, flame retardants are used and often incorporated into materials such as polymers. Flame retardants are found in common household items, e.g., in components of electronic devices, or in appliances in whose environment a fire would have dramatic consequences, e.g., in aircraft or electric vehicles.

In fire safety research, boundary layer flames are canonical configurations characteristic of a variety of wall and ceiling fires, as well as wind-driven fires on flat surfaces. The effects of flame retardants on the dynamics of boundary layer flames are of great scientific importance for efficient and effective flame protection and are currently being investigated at the institute of Simulation of Reactive Thermo-Fluid Systems (STFS).

An experimental-numerical benchmark for boundary layer flames with flame retardants is being developed in collaboration with the Institute of Reactive Flows and Measurement (RSM, Prof. Dreizler). Highly resolved numerical simulations from STFS are combined and analyzed together with optical laser measurements from RSM to gain new insights into the effect of flame retardants on the near-wall thermo-chemical processes. This cooperation is embedded in the Collaborative Research Center/Transregio 150 (www. trr150.tu- darmstadt.de).

Main Responsibilities:

The successful applicant is expected to carry out 3D simulations of boundary layer flames with flame retardants. For the model development and the 3D simulations a powerful software environment is available at the institute. With about 30 scientific staff members STFS is specialized in modeling and simulation of thermo-fluid dynamic processes and systems. Within the framework of the CRC/TRR 150, there is an intensive scientific exchange with other research groups of the TU Darmstadt and the KIT, which are working on related research questions. The position holder will be closely involved in this dynamic structure.

Required Qualification:

Applicants should have a masters degree in mechanical engineering, computational engineering, process engineering or equivalent. We are looking for applicants with a very good degree with the ability to work in a team, creativity, and good communication skills. Programming skills (preferably C++) are required. English language skills complete your profile.

Knowledge and experience in the following areas are desirable:

  • Computational fluid dynamics
  • Fundamentals of combustion
  • OpenFOAM
  • Python
  • Experience with unix operating systems
  • Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt). Part-time employment is generally possible.

Please send your complete application documents, quoting the identification number, to the head of the institute: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Hasse, Otto- Berndt-Str. 2, 64287 Darmstadt, by e-mail to: [email protected] darmstadt.de.

By submitting your application, you agree that your data may be stored and processed for the purpose of filling the vacancy. You can find our privacy policy on our webpage.
