Offer Description

Open clusters are fundamental tracers of the Galactic disk and can cast light on its formation and evolution. The goal of the project is the homogeneous characterization of the kinematics, ages and chemical abundances of open clusters and cluster groups of all ages, in the local disk investigating their formation, evolution and relation with the field stars, and with the Galaxy. To this aim, the data of the ESA Gaia space mission will be coupled with high quality spectroscopic ground based data by the new generation spectrograph WEAVE at the WHT. WEAVE will be operational as of Dicember 2023. This work will pave the way to the scientific exploitation of future ground based surveys and instruments such as Rubin-LSST, 4MOST, MOONS and MSE on which our team is involved. The project is embedded in an international and diverse ecosystem: the PhD student will be exposed to large international collaborations such as Gaia, WEAVE, 4MOST, Rubin-LSST. The selected person will be enrolled at the PhD School in Astronomy of the Padova University. This PhD project is part of the new MWGaiaDN MSCA Doctoral Network, that consists of 10 academic partners across Europe at which 12 PhD students will be active in the network researching a range of topics with Gaia and other data. The network students will be able to participate in a range of cross network training and research events. This project includes a number of secondments at the partner universities of the network. The project requires handling big data sets, data mining tecniques, and the applications of clustering and machine learning methods to large databases. It requires very good software and programming skills.
