Researcher

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time temporary position for 17 months as researcher is available. The position is external financed by the Research Council of Norway and part of the project "RESPONsible early Digital Drug Discovery – RESPOND3: Towards better computational approaches and responsible innovation strategies in early drug discovery: application to antibiotics and COPD”.

About the project/work tasks:

The RESPOND3project is part of the Centre for Digital Live Norway (https: // digitallifenorway.org/) and is a cross disciplinary collaboration between research groups at the Centre for Advanced studies in Biomedical Innovation Law at the University of Copenhagen, the Computational Biology Unit (CBU) and the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bergen and the Department of Biomedicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bergen. The main focus of RESPOND3 will be hit and lead optimization for targets for antibiotics (FMN riboswitch) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (proteinase 3) guided by the use of computational methods (https: // www. digitallifenorway.org/research/respond3/). To enable these activities, we also develop new scoring functions using machine learning. The entire project is embedded in a responsible research and innovation strategy.

The main objective for the advertised position is to use machine learning for the development of a new scoring function for predicting protein-ligand interactions. This will be done in close collaboration with a PhD student. The PhD student has a background in cheminformatics and structure-based design. We are now looking for a researcher with complementary experience in machine learning to join this project. The researcher will be jointly supervised by Prof. Ruth Brenk, Department of Biomedicine/CBU, and Prof. Tom Michoel, Department of Informatics /CBU.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a relevant Norwegian PhD or equivalent doctoral degree
  • The successful applicant must have experience in machine learning/deep learning
  • Experience in machine learning related to applications in cheminformatics or structural biology is an advantage
  • Experience with a programming language is required
