Researcher 1109 in biomathematics
There is a vacancy for a position as researcher in biomathematics at the
Department of Mathematics.
The position is for a period of about 1 year with an end date of 30.06.2024,
and is associated with the EU-funded project “EvoConBiO”.
About the project/work tasks:
Bioenergetic organelles (mitochondria and chloroplasts) power complex
life, but many important questions remain open about how they are
controlled and inherited. These organelles exist in populations inside
cells, carry their own genetic material, and move with rich collective
dynamics. Maintaining these coupled physical and genetic populations is of
central importance to human health, crop production, and countless other
biological processes, but many aspects of this maintenance remain poorly
understood.
This position will involve constructing and applying mathematical models
for the physical and genetic behaviour of these essential populations. The
project will build upon our ground-breaking research using stochastic
modelling and network science to characterise this essential behaviour and
how it is controlled by the cell. It will involve constructing, analysing,
and parameterising discrete stochastic models for evolving populations,
and modelling spatial interactions and/or environmental influences in
these populations. You can read about some recent work here
doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3001153 ; doi.org/10.1017/qpb.2022.15
The position is within our larger project “EvoConBiO” (evolution and
control of bioenergetic organelles) with a diverse team using
interdisciplinary approaches to explore cell and evolutionary biology.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within
biomathematics, applied maths, physics, or similar area involving
constructing and analysing mathematical models.
Experience with biology, while useful, is not a requirement and training
in these aspects will be provided.
Experience constructing, analysing, and parameterising discrete stochastic
models is an advantage.
Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner
and have the ability to cooperate with others.
Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience,
ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position:
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control
system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the
applications.
We can offer:
A good and professionally stimulating working environment.
Position as researcher (code 1109 in the basic collective agreement) and
a gross annual salary of NOK 573 900 (equivalent to pay grade 62) upon
appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of
service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a
particularly well-qualified applicant.
Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
Good welfare benefits
Your application must include:
A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for
applying for the position.
The names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be
the main advisor from the PhD programme.
