The Biophysics department is an interdisciplinary collaboration of biologists, physicists, chemists, biochemists and technicians. The multidisciplinary research in our group covers a wide range of topics from radiobiology, radiation physics and space research to radiation therapy.

The GSI Biophysics – Department is looking for a

PhD student in the “Stem Cell Differentiation and Cytogenetics Group” (all genders)

in part time (65 %) starting from 1st of June 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD project is part of the BMBF-funded cooperation ESTRANGE that will be performed in close collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Aschaffenburg.

Exposure of the brain to ionizing radiation, e.g. during cancer therapy, is associated with severe adverse neurological effects. In ESTRANGE the molecular and intercellular mechanisms of radiation-induced neuropsychological and neurocognitive disorders will be studied using an in vitro brain assembloid model that mimics interactions between various brain regions. Analysis of radiation-induced changes in neuronal networks and alterations in the functional connectivity of brain regions will be the focus of the PhD project.

Your tasks:

  • 3D image processing (of confocal and light sheet images)
  • Development/tailoring of imaging software to analyze neuronal networks/connectomes in brain assembloids
  • Characterization/quantification of cell-cell interactions and radiation- induced alterations in the cellular composition/interaction of neuronal networks using state of the art micoroscopic technologies.
  • Your profile:

  • Master of Science in image processing/optical technologies or similar qualification
  • Experience in optical technology and 3D image processing preferably in human organ-like in vitro models, software development/programming and data processing is mandatory
  • Interest in complex cellular in vitro models (brain organoids and assembloids), inter-cellular communication and its characterization/quantificatione
  • Willingness to work in an international team to develop and optimize brain assembloid models based on image analyses and neuronal connectomes
  • Knowledge in cell culture techniques is a plus, but not mandatory.
  • We offer working in an exciting, multidisciplinary field of research under competent supervision. You will be integrated in a large cooperative network and member of the graduate school HGS-Hire.

    The contract is limited until February 28th 2026 with a possibility for prolongation. The salary is based on the collective agreement for public employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst - TVöD (Bund)). GSI supports the vocational development of women.
