The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

For the Laboratory for Waste Management (LES) of the Nuclear Energy and Safety Research Division (NES) we are looking for a

PhD Student

in the field of Cement Environmental Chemistry

Your tasks

The project aims to decipher the formation pathways and chemical structures of Fe- II/III-hydrotalcites in Mg-cement and to determine their thermodynamic properties and redox behaviors. As a PhD Student you will be registered in the Institute of Geology in University of Bern.

During your PhD study your research activity will be on:

  • Revealing the formation mechanism of Fe-II/III-hydrotalcites in Mg-cements
  • Deciphering the chemical structures of synthesized Fe-II/III-hydrotalcites via spectroscopic analyses and molecular simulations
  • Determining the thermodynamic properties of the Fe-II/III-hydrotalcites and establishing solid solution models
  • Contribute to side projects, support to master thesis student, laboratories maintenance and improve security protocols in laboratory
  • Publication of results in journals or conferences
  • Your profile
  • Excellent qualifications with a university degree (Master or equivalent) in Chemistry, Material Science, Physical Chemistry
  • Solid knowledge in cement science and heavy metal immobilization
  • Rich experience with wet chemistry methods, lab-based characterizations and thermodynamic modelling
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken)
  • We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture.
