The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, and educational science.

We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. The department provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. There are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience in all aspects of higher education. More information about us can be found on our website: https: // www. chalmers.se/en/departments/mv/

Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.

At the Department of Mathematical Sciences there are many internationally successful researchers in a wide variety of research areas. The division of Algebra and Geometry conducts research in areas such as algebraic geometry, complex analysis, number theory, representation theory, mathematical physics, and educational science.

We are now looking for one PhD student in mathematics with a focus on educational science.

Subject area

Mathematics with a focus on educational science.

Project description

Project: Digital Educational Material for the Global South and Refugee Camps

At the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the Akelius Math Learning Lab will be established in 2024. In the lab, teachers and researchers will collaborate to develop digital mathematics educational materials primarily intended for use in the Global South and refugee camps through international aid organizations. The material will be available in many languages. The goal is for the material to also become a resource for teachers to use in their classrooms, in Sweden and other countries. We now want to initiate follow-up research. Possible focuses could include studying the material's effects on learning, how the material is received and used in different contexts, processes for how the material is based on research and tested in practice- oriented research, and how involved parties affect and contribute.

The ambition is for the doctoral student, in addition to the research environment at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, to also be part of activities organized by the inter-departmental educational science research school CUL at the University of Gothenburg.

Job assignments

As a PhD student you will be part of an international research environment while you expand your knowledge of the field and write your thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

The employment is limited to a maximum of four years, with the possibility for one year extension due to departmental duties.

Eligibility

The eligibility for academic positions is given in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. To qualify for the position, you must have obtained a master's degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete that degree by the time the employment starts.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics. You should also include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co- authored.

A teacher's degree and teaching experience is meritorious.

The bachelor's level teaching is normally in Swedish, although the teaching at the master's and PhD levels is in English. Thus, good language skills are required.

The applications will be assessed by a local recruitment committee at Mathematical Sciences.
