The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

PhD student in Marine Microbial Ecology

The Department of Marine Sciences (https:// marine.gu.se) is Sweden's most complete marine research and education environment and is one of the few such organisations in Europe. The Department of Marine Sciences, established in 2015, brings together expertise in physical oceanography, marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology, and marine cultural conservation. The department thus has excellent conditions for meeting future challenges in marine research and education. The Department of Marine Sciences has permanent staff in three locations: in Gothenburg and at the research stations Kristineberg and Tjärnö in Bohuslän.

General information about being a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university's doctoral student pages.

Subject area discription

A PhD student position is available in our new Marine Microbial Ecology (MMEco) research group at the Department of Marine Sciences at Gothenburg University.

The Phd project aims to understand and quantify how marine microbes are affected by varying resource supply and temperature regimes and how microbial functioning impacts marine dissolved organic matter turnover. Given the multiplicity of ecological processes and interactions of diverse taxa in natural communities, state-of-the-art molecular and system biology approaches will be used to detect species-specific reactions to environmental drivers.

The focus will be on marine bacteria studied by experimental and marine sampling campaigns, but subproject may be linked to phytoplankton. In the project, we collaborate with national and international researchers.

Assignments

The successful candidate will conduct experiments and participate in large- scale experiments (mesocosms) and/or sea-going expeditions to collect water/sediment samples from Swedish west coast and Baltic Sea waters and analyse them for community composition and ecological traits. Research visits to collaboration institutions and conferences may occur as a part of the position. The successful candidate is also expected to author and write scientific publications and a PhD thesis in English.

As a PhD student at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, the candidate will be expected to work in a small team, have flexibility to adapt to change, commitment to learn new skills, and build excellent data handling and communication skills.

It is expected that the candidate is willing and capable to perform large- scale experiments (including fieldwork at research stations and/or joining seagoing expeditions) within the course of the project. Communication skills in oral and written English are a requirement. Additionally, the following assignments apply:

  • Produce the doctoral thesis
  • Process and analyse samples and molecular datasets
  • Disseminate results in peer-reviewed journals and elsewhere
  • as part of the Swedish research education, the candidate is expected to participate in courses or similar relevant activities (comprising one year of full-time studies)
  • Institutional service, including teaching assistant assignments, can be included in up to 20% of full-time which can extend the position length
  • Demonstrate public outreach and engagement activities
  • Competence

It is beneficial if the applicant has experiences in some or more of the following: aquatic field work, microbiological culturing techniques, molecular techniques, bioinformatics, ecological analyses and/or biogeochemistry. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team as well as excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and ability to document research results in English are essential for the position. We attach much weight to the ability for independent thinking and initiative. Experience in teaching, outreach or leadership will be considered as positive assets. The main criterion for selection will be the motivation and research potential of the applicant; i.e. scientific publications will be a strong asset.

    Assessment criteria

The applicant should hold an academic university master's degree or be close to finishing. The qualifications for education on a doctoral level are: a Masters level degree or similar, at least 240 university points, of which 60 are on an advanced level, or corresponding knowledge acquired in another way within or outside the country of Sweden.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious candidate with a MSc degree in biology or natural science with interest for marine environments (e.g., ecology, microbiology, molecular biology), environmental science, marine science, biogeochemistry or closely related fields. Candidates from all countries are welcome to apply. The starting date is as soon as possible, based on agreement.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1998:80. Only a person that is admitted to a doctoral level education can hold the position. The candidates will be judged for their motivation and ability to successfully complete the program and their past performance relative to research opportunity. In addition to pursuing their own research studies, the holder of the position may be required to perform duties such as teaching, research, and administration according to special regulations.

Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend an interview via Zoom.
