The research subject of Building materials consists of 19 persons including 5 professors and two post doc. The subject focusses on development of sustainable materials and production technologies for the construction industry as well as on ice and arctic conditions related research and education. https: // www. ltu.se/research/subjects/Byggmaterial?l=en

Subject description Building Materials includes sustainable building materials and their application technologies, recycling and reuse, and applied building physics, especially focusing on the artic conditions.

Project description The goal of the project is to improve circularity and reduce the amount of waste from the Västerbothnian mining and metal industry by converting them into resources, that are used them to produce concrete to be used in a mining environment. Concrete products will be developed with a combination of inert waste and waste rock. Next comes green pretreatment methods, such as mechanochemical activation, to be used to possibly activate part of the waste to partially replace the Portland cement, especially in internal mining applications, which leads to a greatly reduced carbon footprint of concrete.

Duties As a PhD student you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. In addition, you can have the opportunity to try the teacher role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects. Tasks will include laboratory work, analysis of data, modelling and writing scientific papers.

Qualifications You as a candidate have a master's degree in civil engineering, materials science or chemistry. The candidate should have a basic knowledge related to building materials and especially including cementitious binders and concretes. The candidate should speak fluent English.
