The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Laser Particle Acceleration invites applications as PhD Student (f/m/d) Performing and analyzing large scale parallel simulations on short high-intensity laser pulse interaction with solids.

The position will be available from 1 August 2023. The employment contract is limited to three years.

Your tasks:
  • Assist the understanding of experiments for laser ion acceleration from our HZDR laser systems DRACO and PENELOPE by performing and analyzing large scale parallel simulations
  • Work in our team on Computational Physics, simulating and understanding fundamental processes that occur during the interaction of high power lasers with solids or near critical density targets
  • Participate in our team's effort to develop new experimental ideas including tayloring the interaction process, probing the self-emission of the laser irradiated warm and hot dense matter, or performing probing experiments at HIBEF (EuropeanXFEL)
  • Your profile:
  • Master`s degree in Physics or similar
  • Experience in computer simulations, ideally previous experience on computer clusters
  • lnterest in the understanding of the physics of interactions of high power lasers with solids, ideally you have knowledge on plasma physics or radiative properties of warm to hot matter
  • Helpful, but not required is the knowledge of C++, python, or programming for accelerators
