Job descriptionPhotonics is widely regarded as the key enabling technology of the 21st century and its application and use in many scientific and industrial fields is accelerated through Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), which combine many optical components into a miniaturized chip format. Similar to electronic ICs, PICs are revolutionizing areas such as healthcare, communication and sensing and have the potential to be disruptive to the whole society. A key element in building towards very large scale integration (VLSI) of photonics is the optical circulator, which manages the flow of light in complex networks.
TU/e, together with several multidisciplinary European partners, are researching towards a fully integrated and miniaturized optical circulator based on a novel plasmonic-hybrid concept, within a recently granted European project CIRCULIGHT. Within the project, TU/e is responsible for the photonic platform development and integration of the plasmonic-hybrid material into the waveguide system.
This PhD position is opened particularly targeting the design of photonic devices, hosting the plasmonic-hybrid material, as well as the technology development of the integration process. Record efficiency and footprint are anticipated by such integration concept. Besides from pursuing the device performance beyond state of the art, it is also envisaged to integrate such device into a comprehensive manufacturing platform consisting of highest performance polarization, phase and gain control elements. The InP membrane on silicon (imos) platform – pioneered at TU/e – will be developed into a comprehensive heterogeneous integration methodology which supports integration by means of wafer, die and coupon bonding. https: // research.tue.nl/en/publications/indium-phosphide-membrane- nanophotonic-integrated-circuits-on-sil.
Together, as part of a big team, you will be working closely with a multidisciplinary consortium, covering from material sciences, optical physics through to social sciences.
The new position will involve hands-on process development using recently installed, state of the art 4" (100 mm) indium phosphide manufacturing line, including high reproducibility epitaxy, deep ultra-violet scanner lithography and industry-grade etch and deposition equipment. These facilities and the associated expertise are considered to be unique in an academic research environment. The project is supported with the infrastructure at the TU/e nanolab.
Candidates are welcome to ask for additional technical background information from Yuqing Jiao, [email protected].
