A PhD position is available in the sensing and monitoring lab of Prof. Lilian Witthauer at the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine and Metabolism (UDEM) and the University of Bern. The research focus of this group is on the development of new sensing technologies for applications in the field of diabetes.

The challenge

  • Development of a new glucose sensor using spectroscopy
  • Working with clinical and research partners, including start-ups and established companies.
  • Writing and submission research papers
  • Presentation of scientific results at international conferences
  • Your profile

  • A master's physics, biomedical engineering, or similar with a strong background in biomedical optics
  • Detailed and up-to-date knowledge of infrared spectroscopy
  • Experience with building optical setups
  • Knowledge in at least one programming language, such as python or C++
  • Knowledge of statistical methods
  • Highly motivated, creative candidate with good problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to collaborate in a highly interdisciplinary team
  • Prior experience working with biomedical sensors is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills in English

Our group is located at the Diabetes Center Berne and belongs to the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine and Metabolism (UDEM) at the Bern University Hospital and University of Bern.

    You will be enrolled in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bern and the salary is according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
