PhD Position in Cardiac Stem Cell Biology

The research group of PD Dr. Nina Ullrich at the Institute of Physiology of the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern, Department of Cardiac Physiology, is offering a new position for a PhD student in the field of:

Structural and functional maturation of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes

You will join a young and dynamic team that offers a fully established lab with state-of-the-art equipment, supportive working atmosphere and an inspiring scientific community. The position is available for the period of 3 years.

Our research focuses on the identification of specific environmental cues and molecular processes that lead to maturation of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. Special stem cell culture methods, cutting edge imaging techniques, in vitro electrophysiological recordings and molecular biology serve as the basis for our investigations.

Job description

  • Development of novel strategies for cardiomyocyte differentiation and in vitro maturation (incl. single cell analysis and multicellular preparations for tissue engineering)
  • Identification and modulation of cell-environment interactions (molecular analysis of outside-in signaling cascades)
  • Structural analysis of the cardiogenic phenotype (protein biochemistry, immunocytochemistry, modern imaging methods)
  • Analysis of molecular and functional remodeling processes (live-cell imaging, electrophysiology)
  • Qualification profile

  • Masters degree in biology, biophysics or related life science discipline
  • Preferred proficiency in cell biology, electrophysiology and/or optics
  • Interest in data analysis and basic programming
  • Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills
  • Highly self-motivated and enthusiastic for interdisciplinary research
  • Benefits

  • We offer an interdisciplinary, international and supportive team
  • Excellent technological expertise
