PhD Position “Greenland Ice Cores as Proxy for European Extremes” (m/f/d)

Background Using high-resolution Greenland ice cores and related proxies from mid- latitudes (such as oxygen isotopes in tree rings, lake sediments, and corals), as well as (paleo)reanalysis data, observations, and future projections based on model runs specially designed to include freshwater hosing to simulate potential strong melt events in Greenland, this PhD project aims to investigate the teleconnections between Greenland ice cores and mid- latitude weather extremes. It also aims to explore how the relationship between Greenland's climate and extreme weather events over Europe is evolving. The project will establish a long-term perspective on recent changes in Greenland's climate and associated extremes over Europe. Main goals:

  • Analysing Greenland–Europe teleconnection patterns as captured by various proxy data such as ice cores, tree rings, lake sediment, and corals
  • Identifying large-scale extreme climate anomaly patterns associated with interannual to multidecadal ice core variability
  • Investigating the implications of widespread melting in Greenland on extreme events in Europe and potential changes, both present and future, in large-scale atmospheric circulation
  • Tasks

  • Collecting and analysing all available proxy records such as ice cores, tree rings, lake sediments, and corals from Greenland and mid-latitudes
  • Analysing specially designed climate simulations performed using the Alfred Wegener Institute climate model, AWI-CM
  • Writing scientific papers
  • Presenting results at international conferences
  • Requirements

  • Master's or equivalent degree in a relevant field such as meteorology, oceanography, climate science, physics, or mathematics
  • Demonstrated programming skills
  • a solid understanding of climate physics and paleoclimatology
  • Good communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • Further Information
