Job description

For this research project focused on enhancing haptic navigation and tactile feedback systems, we are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD student. This interdisciplinary project combines elements of joint-action models, sensory substitution, and human-computer interaction to develop innovative solutions for individuals with visual disabilities, prosthetics users and applications in virtual reality (VR) environments.

Job Description

In this project you will develop a joint action model for haptic navigation, based on existing Bayesian decision-making or dynamic neural field theories. You will design and implement vibrotactile feedback into a working prototype. Initially this will be for goal-directed hand movements in VR environments, but it will be extended to whole body movements. To evaluate the effectiveness of the tactile feedback system you will plan and conduct lab experiments involving human participants. You will apply psychophysical models and methods as well as analyze time-series of movement trajectories to assess the performance and impact of the haptic navigation cues. Unity, Unreal Engine, C#, or Python will be used to program and refine the VR-based prototype.

As a PhD researcher in the Human Technology Interaction group, you will work in a setting with extensive expertise in and facilities for conducting research with human participants. We have VR setups and an Optitrak position sensing system. Moreover, you will be working with wearables incorporating vibrotactile feedback.

Job requirements
  • A master's degree in Human Technology Interaction, Human Movements Sciences, Psychology or similar.
  • A strong foundation in calculus and linear algebra.
  • Knowledge of psychophysics is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Python.
  • Previous experience in research involving human participants.
  • Experience working with individuals with sensory disabilities is a plus.
  • Affinity with psychology, neuroscience, human movement science, or related fields.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).
  • Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. € 2,770 and max. € 3,539.
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self- aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
