PhD Fellowship Position in SciLMi: Scientific literacies of teachers and students in secondary education

SPS develops the study of professions as a multidisciplinary field of research, comprising research from a wide range of disciplines. SPS aims to be a leading centre for research and graduate study within the study of professions in the Nordic countries.

OsloMet's Centre for the Study of Professions (SPS) offers a 3-year PhD position in the research project SciLMi, for a candidate with a background in Educational Sciences, Educational Psychology, Educational Sociology, or other relevant disciplines.

SciLMi

SciLMi: Meta-Scientific Literacies in the (Mis-)Information Age is a three- year Teacher Academy project funded by the EU's Erasmus+ program. The project aims to develop, pilot, and evaluate hybrid courses for teachers to equip them with the competence to teach students how to interpret information. This includes information from the internet or social media, as well as information from newspapers or traditional media. The SciLMi Teacher Academy aims to empower teachers to educate students as competent democratic citizens in a (digital) media reality where they are confronted daily with erroneous or misleading information.

Project activities

The main activities of SciLMi involve the development, implementation, and evaluation of learning activities to enhance students' digital competence, enabling them to function as competent citizens in a digitalized society. The work is divided into eight work packages. Two of these work packages will develop and evaluate mobile programs to support teachers' professional development, enabling them to enhance students' ability to interpret information. These courses will be taught by project partners. Initially, a systematic review of the literature on teachers' and students' digital competence will be conducted.

The PhD fellow is free to choose their own trajectory in the project, within the frame of SciLMi. This trajectory can be supplemented with activities in a similar project, financed by the same Erasmus+ program, Teacher Education for a Future in Flux (TEFF). The precise design of the topic and tasks will be developed as a project outline in collaboration between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor after the candidate is hired.

The ph.d. scholarship is for three years, with the possibility of an extension of up to one year if additional work is included (by mutual agreement).

Project group

The SciLMi project is led by researchers at the University of Innsbruck and involves a wide range of partners from various European countries. The doctoral candidate, along with the supervisor, will serve as representatives of OsloMet in the SciLMi project, and there will be regular project meetings in which the doctoral candidate is expected to participate. Data collection takes place in collaboration with the partner institutions.

The Centre

The doctoral candidate will be part of the research group Professional Knowledge and Qualification at the Centre for the Study of Professions (SPS).

At SPS, you will work in an interdisciplinary environment that is also theoretically and methodologically diverse, alongside researchers and doctoral candidates with backgrounds in sociology, education, history, philosophy, political science, social anthropology, health sciences, economics, and psychology. The Centre is a leading research and doctoral education environment in the study of professions in the Nordic region. Currently, the Centre has around 50 affiliated people.

Qualification requirements:

a master's degree (120 ECTS) in educational science, psychology or other relevant social-scientific discipline, with grade B or better

good methodological skills, both qualitative and quantitative

very good English skills, oral and written

you must master a Scandinavian language, oral and written

you must have SPS as your place of work

The offer of a scholarship is contingent upon admission to the doctoral program in the study of professions before commencement. Application for admission to the program will take place after the scholarship offer has been given.

Relevant research experience, academic publications, and participation in international seminars/conferences are valued, but not required.

In the assessment of applicants, emphasis will be placed on the submitted extended letter of application (see below), the candidate's relevance to the project and to the Centre's research areas, the quality of previous work (e.g., master's thesis), and grades from higher education.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job title and position code, state salary wage scale 54, or 532 200 NOK per year. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well- qualified applicants.

CV, reference letters and all pages of certificates/diplomas. The certificates/diplomas must include ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution. Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.

Extended application letter (2-3 pages where you explain why you want to do a PhD, why you are interested in this position and this project, relevant experience and background, and what you can contribute, written in English)

Your master's degree/second degree thesis (and any other scholarly work that you wish the expert committee to take into consideration) along with a list of your publications/research experiences, if relevant.

As the first step in the evaluation process, a Selection Committee will review all applications. Applicants who meet the qualification requirements will be reviewed by a Panel of Experts. Following the expert panel's assessment, the most highly ranked candidates will be invited to an interview.
