About the job

We have a PhD vacancy for three years at the K. G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology, Department of Public Health and Nursing (ISM),NTNU Norway.

The Department of Public Health and Nursing (ISM) is responsible for research, teaching, innovation and dissemination in community medicine, nursing, primary health care and public health and thus actively contributing to the knowledge for a better world mission of NTNU.

We currently have a vacancy at the K. G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology for a PhD Fellowship. This is a 3-year temporary position within the field of genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics focused on investigating the etiology of chronic kidney disease. We seek a talented, self-motivated and enthusiastic person with experience in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, medicine, epidemiology or biostatistics. For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is to complete doctoral education in order to obtain a doctoral degree.

The main supervisor for this project will be Ben Brumpton and the co- supervisor will be Humaira Rasheed.

Duties of the position

This PhD project will involve investigation of genetic and causal risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) using large population-based data sets including HUNT and UK Biobank. The candidate is expected to use a wide range of statistical approaches such as genome-wide association analyses, Mendelian randomization, functional bioinformatic follow-up and network analysis to investigate which modifiable risk factors are most important for CKD.

The period of employment for the position as a PhD candidate is 3 years full- time. Admission to a doctoral degree program is a requirement.

Required selection criteria

You must have a professionally relevant background in field such as genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, public health, health sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, molecular biology, or a medical degree

Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level

You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.

Experience in quantitative statistical analysis

Proven experience in academic writing

Relevant technical knowledge and experience with statistical software (R or equivalent), programming languages (Python, Perl, C++ or equivalent) and/or distributed computation

Proficiency in spoken and written English

You must meet the requirements for admission to the to the PhD programme in medicine and health sciences

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred selection criteria

Previous research experience and/or publication

Experience working in linux-based environments and with R or equivalent

Excellent communication skills in English, both orally and written

Experience in genetic epidemiology

Research experience in Mendelian randomization, genome-wide association analysis and or polygenic risk scores

Personal characteristics

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Medicine and Health Sciences within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. The position is subject to internal funding.
