About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Statens Vegvesen (Norwegian Road Authority - SVV)/Ferry free E39 need to develop new technology solutions for bridge constructions in marine environment. New floating bridge concepts require corrosion protection of steel structures in the splash zone in addition to protection of steel surfaces exposed to air in pontoons and bridge boxes. The regulations used today, require that all bridges and load bearing constructions shall be designed with a 100-year lifetime. This does not include the corrosion protection system. However, to make a design that includes frequent maintenance of the corrosion protection system of these big floating bridges will be complicated and costly. Today structures exposed to seawater are protected by a combination of organic coating and cathodic protection (sacrificial anodes of impressed current system), while surfaces exposed to marine atmosphere is protected by a coating system (organic- and/or a metallic coating). These protection systems will require maintenance during a 100-year lifetime.

Due to this, SVV have identified a need to develop new solutions for corrosion protection of the floating bridge structures made from carbon steel to minimize the need for maintenance work during the lifetime. We are looking for a PhD Candidate for this project, where the main objective is to develop technology for floating bridges that exclude the need for regular maintenance of the corrosion protection of carbon steel structure elements in seawater (including the splash zone) and in corrosion class C3-C5 according to ISO 12944 (pontoons, columns, bridge boxes). We are looking for you who want to collaborate with Statens Vegvesen and conduct in depth research in this particular field.

Your immediate leader is Professor Roy Johnsen.

If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
