Function description

Join us to create better data-driven cancer care! We are looking for four enthusiastic, talented, and ambitious PhD candidates to strengthen the AVL-NKI & Kaiko Digital Oncology Program; an ambitious and transformative program driven by NKI-AVL's mission: a cure for every cancer and excellent care for every patient.

Digital Oncology Program The Digital Oncology Program aims to bring all patient data, including history, physical examination, radiology images, blood tests, pathology results and genomics to one place where the data is structured and organized. This results in a single source of truth and easy availability of data for medical teams, researchers and patients. It seems rather logical and simple ..... Unfortunately, it is not. In healthcare, patient data is highly fragmented and data is stuck in different, poorly communicating subsystems - also known as data silos.

By centralizing patient data and structuring it in a FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reuse ) way, data can be easily reused. With the help of machine learning and algorithms, oncology care is taken to the next level; the registration burden will reduce and the completeness and quality of data will increase, and care teams will be able to work fully data - informed without the current technological limitations. Moreover, oncology care becomes much more personalized through the use of real-time data and the help of decision support. Oncology research will also accelerate as data sharing within and between hospitals is optimally supported, allowing to find new insights and solution directions.

The Digital Oncology program is a long-term collaboration between the AVL - NKI and Kaiko. Kaiko is the technical innovation partner and consists of an ambitious and diverse team of data scientists, software engineers and medical experts. They are building a highly secure and scalable cloud-based healthcare platform. On the platform, efficient and integrated workflows and applications are developed with the input and help of clinical professionals. On the one hand, for innovative research and, on the other, to continuously learn, improve patient outcomes and realize the best-fit care for each patient.

The PhD program The DO program will be supported by a PhD program, in which 4 PhDs will contribute to the various aspects of data-driven oncological care meanwhile building a scientific research portfolio. The aim of the PhD program is to

  • Provide care teams with in - depth analyses for clinical /organizational purposes
  • Facilitate care teams with safeguarding collection of high-quality data
  • Develop and implement (AI powered) digital solutions for use of clinical settings by care team members
  • Validate the impact (in terms of e.g. improved work processes, patient outcomes, experience) of the developed clinical solutions.
  • Gain insight in the way digital clinical solutions can be optimally developed and adopted in healthcare processes
  • Design and evaluate implementation and change processes in the context of the digital product development
  • Job requirements
