The structural integrity of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and in particular of the cladding is of utmost importance in view of conditioning of the SNF for final disposal after dry (long-term) interim storage. However, the SNF is subjected to phenomena capable to increase the stress imparted to the cladding while modifying its mechanical properties. In this context, the evolution of the mechanical properties of SNF cladding (e.g. Young´s modulus and hardness) needs to be investigated and the parameters influencing these properties have to be accurately singled out and understood. The purpose of the present research work is to study the mechanical properties of irradiated cladding, stored for several years after the end of irradiation in reactor.
Organizational unitInstitute for Nuclear Waste Disposal (INE)
Job descriptionThe first part of the PhD research work focuses on the characterisation of SNF cladding samples stored in the shielded box line of the Institute for Nuclear Waste Disposal (INE).
In particular, hydrides content and morphology together with the oxide layer thickness and structure can be determined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and synchrotron x-ray diffraction.
The second part of the research work aims at understanding the mechanical properties evolution by means of micromechanical testing methods with the eventual goal to extract plastic deformation and fracture mechanisms of the material. For example, micro-compression tests can be used to determine the stress-strain behaviour on a small length scale. Suitability of other micromechanical test methods will be assessed on the basis of the microstructural investigations in the first part of the PhD project.
The third part deals with data evaluation and writing of peer-review publications as well as the doctoral thesis.
The work takes place in controlled areas of the KIT and requires strict compliance with the relevant applicable safety regulations. The methods used in the context of the work are available in the controlled areas of KIT as well as at the INE and CAT-CAT beamlines of the Karlsruhe Synchrotron Radiation Source (KARA). The work takes place in laboratory fume cupboards, alpha-tight glove boxes and in the shielded box line (ABL) of the KIT.
