The mission of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung is to understand and design nanostructured materials down to atomic and electronic scales. In this spirit, we conduct basic research on structural and functional materials, mostly metallic alloys, embracing synthesis and processing, characterization and properties, as well as their response in engineering components exposed to real environmental conditions. We work interdisciplinary, with intense mutual stimulation among experimentalists and theoreticians as well as among different groups and departments.

Hydrogen can become a carbon-free, clean alternative energy carrier to replace fossil fuels. Its production by electricity-driven water-splitting reactions has been considered a promising strategy. However, catalysts are vital for improving the energy conversion efficiency, and there is a race to design better catalysts to make H a viable option as a fuel. Nanoporous metals have great potential for application in catalysis due to their high surface-to- volume ratio and potential for designing their surface chemistry. We are looking for a student who can conduct a

Master thesis (f/m/div) on Synthesis and characterization of nanoporous Ru

from Ru-Ti thin films

6-9 months depending on the university requirements

Your tasks
  • Optimization of the dealloying process of Ru-Ti films for the synthesis of nanoporous Ru.
  • Characterization of the as-deposited films and nanoporous structure via scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS) analyses.
  • Electrochemical characterization of the nanoporous thin films.
  • Characterization of the local chemistry via atom probe tomography (APT).
  • Participation in or leading the writing of scientific journal articles based on the results.
  • Your profile
  • Master student in Material Science, Nanoscience/ Nanotechnology, Chemistry, or related fields
  • Prior experience in electrochemistry is preferred. Knowledge of electron microscopy is highly welcome but not necessarily required.
  • Excellent written and oral English skills.
  • Interest in acquiring new skills and aptitude for problem-solving.
  • What we offer

Our department investigates the fundamentals of the relations between synthesis, microstructure and properties of complex nanostructured materials, with an emphasis on materials for the energy transition. We offer a dynamic and stimulating research environment and access to state-of-the-art infrastructure. Your position: The duration of the Master thesis is coupled with the requirements of your university. You will be supervised directly by Dr. Aparna Saksena and integrated in the research group of Prof. Baptiste Gault. The Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The Max Planck Society strives for gender and diversity equality. We welcome applications from all backgrounds.
