How will you contribute?The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is seeking to recruit a PhD student to work on the development of advanced laser-based diagnostics for the experimental characterization of liquid flows.
This project is funded with an FNR AFR award and, in collaboration with the Mechanical Engineering Department at the National University of Singapore (NUS), intends to combine two competencies at the two institutions, namely laser analytics/diagnostics/instrumentation and liquid flow instrumentation (e.g., water tunnels). An important aspect of this PhD program is that approximately 40% of the experimental work will be conducted at the research facilities at NUS – hence travel flexibility is necessary.
As a PhD student, you will contribute to this project through the development of novel concepts for liquid flow – laser interaction and demonstrate its use for the experimental characterization of these flows in real life applications, such as those encountered in a water tunnel.
These ground-breaking studies will form the basis for various diagnostics in e.g. the water flow around/under a vessel, leading towards e.g. more efficient transport over liquid bodies, ultimately resulting in CO2, fuel and cost reduction for these activities. The project involves establishing the theoretical background of the interaction principles through calculations and simulations, the detailed elaboration of the parameters space needed for experimental studies, as well as the hardware design of a novel laser apparatus to be interfaced with liquid flows.
In the NUS water tunnels, the instrumentation to be developed at LIST will be utilized to characterize the liquid flows near bodies, and benchmarked against more traditional measurement approaches, thus demonstrating the usefulness of the developed technique. You will actively contribute to the design, development, demonstration of the required instrumentation, as well as to the analysis of the scientific results to be obtained.
One of the main challenges of the project will be to prove experimentally the benefits of laser diagnostics for liquid flow characterization, as well as integrating the concept into existing water tunnels at NUS.
You will have to assess the best technological configuration and the related theoretical and experimental findings to push the intended concept towards higher technology readiness levels.
You will work closely with highly skilled scientists and engineers in the dynamic environments present at both the AINA group within LIST's Materials Research & Technology Department, as well as the Thermofluids Division at NUS.
You will acquire highly valued skills in the applications of advanced laser diagnostic techniques as well as working with tunnel facilities. You will take a main role in the development of the techniques and instruments mentioned above.
You will coordinate the local research efforts together with input from international project partners. In consultation with the project leader, you will design and perform relevant experiments, analyze and interpret the results, write scientific articles and disseminate the results in international conferences.
