Earthen structures (i.e. structures using soil as a construction material) possess many of the necessary characteristics for a green and circular construction industry. Nevertheless, construction of new earthen structures is in decline worldwide mostly because earth is not considered a robust and safe construction material.

The objective of this PhD thesis is to investigate and exploit the mechanical characteristics of soil in order to build seismic-resistant earthen structures. This will be achieved with a combination of experimental work for the mechanical characterization and the development of numerical tools for the design and structural analysis of earthen structures.

Your Profile

You have a Master's Degree in civil or structural engineering. A strong background in structural mechanics is required. Knowledge in soil mechanics and earthquake engineering is of advantage but not mandatory. Good programming skills are necessary. You are proficient in spoken and written English.
