Department of Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science

Department of Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science is one of four departments at the Faculty of Education. The department performs research in food science and sport science as well as their union. The department manages the Center for Health and Performance, which is a center construction between the Faculty of Education and Sahlgrenska Academy (Medical Faculty). Here interdisciplinary research is performed in collaboration between preclinical and clinical researchers. As postgraduate student at the Department of Food and Nutrition, and Sport Science and Center for Health and Performance you will work in a rich and varying research environment that combines multiple researchers with different competences and experiences.

Project description

In collaboration with researchers at the Queen Silvia Children´s Hospital, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and clinical researchers at other university hospitals in Sweden, a national project is performed to investigate physical activity and quality of life in children and adolescents with congenital heart defects of different severity compared to a control group. An important goal for the health care is to support a physically active lifestyle in this patient group.

Job assignment

The PhD-program runs over four years of full time, and includes PhD-thesis research and writing, courses, and literature studies. To be awarded the degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the PhD- candidate should write and orally defend a scientific PhD-thesis that is approved in a public defense (disputation) and pass the courses that are part of the PhD-program.

As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration. The employment will in such a case be prolonged so the total time for postgraduate education will be equivalent to 4 years.

The doctoral student should be present at the Department of Food and Nutrition and Sport Science and actively participate in the research and teaching environment.

Eligibility

The general eligibility requirements for education at third-cycle level are:

  • having completed a degree at second-cycle level, or
  • the fulfilment of course requirements totalling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or
  • the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad.
  • Specific eligibility requirements are:

  • having at least 90 credits in sports science or in a different subject important to sports science, of which 15 credits constitute an independent work.
  • Specific eligibility one may also have if corresponding qualifications have been achieved in another way within the country or abroad.
  • required language skills in Swedish and English for taking compulsory courses and participating in seminars or similar activities.
  • Assessment

    Upon appointment, considerations will be given to the degree of ability to assimilate the doctoral education and to what extent the applicant's area of interest is within the specific research area. The research plan for the PhD- thesis is assessed according to the specified direction and whether it addresses justified and researchable questions and indicates adequate forms of implementation.

    Mandatory for applicants are experience of accelerometry (data gathering and data analysis). Meritorious is previous experience of work and research with children and adolescents with congenital heart defects.

    Admission and selection are also conditional on the Department's supervisory resources within the doctoral student's research focus.

    Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1998:80.

    The doctoral studentship is appointed provided that the necessary decisions being made.

    Employment

    Once you have been admitted for education at third-cycle level, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.

    The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100.

    Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time.

    A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at third-cycle level for four years.

    The application must contain the following parts:

  • Personal letter where you describe yourself and justify why you are interested in the doctoral student service. Also state current contact information for two reference persons who know your performance well, for example, former employer, supervisor, or teacher in sports science or equivalent.

  • Resume list that includes completed courses and university courses as well as employment. Also attach certified copies of diplomas and proof of special eligibility.

  • Copies of thesis/essay and any publications or manuscripts.

  • Suggestion for project plan for how you would like to proceed to investigate physical activity and quality of life in children and adolescents with congenital heart defects (see above proposed focus of project) and convey scientific knowledge and professional competence in accordance with the subject of Sport Science study plan for postgraduate education. The project plan (1-4 pages) must be written in English and contain the following headings: Background, Purpose, Materials and method, Timetable, Importance (eg proposals for reporting results and expected application) and References.
