The unit of economic history is now looking for a doctoral student. The employment is a fixed-term employment for four years from autumn 2023 or by agreement.

Assigned duties Those who are employed as a doctoral student shall primarily devote their time to doctoral studies, aimed to result in a doctoral degree. Work carried should consists of own research as well as participation in postgraduate courses (third-cycle studies). You will be part of the department's research work where you work closely with researchers at the unit. The doctoral employment is carried out as an independent work within your own chosen field. Therefore, great importance is attached to the attached dissertation plan. Those appointed to doctoral position may also work, to a limited extent, with educational tasks and administration at the Unit of Economic history. However, duties of this kind may not comprise of more than 20 percent of full-time. If so, the period of employment will be extended from up to five years.

About the employment The employment is a fixed-term employment full-time for 4 years from the autumn of 2023 at the department of economic history, Umeå University. For this position, you are expected to perform your work at Umeå University Campus and we are looking for a doctoral student who will be part of our daily activities at the unit. Salary is set in accordance with an established doctoral ladder for this positions. Only those who have been admitted to postgraduate education at postgraduate level may be employed as doctoral students. Provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993: 100 (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5).

Eligibility / Admission requirements To be eligible as a doctoral student in economic history requires a degree at advanced level or satisfied the requirements for courses comprising of at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second- cycle; or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. (Högskoleförordningen 7 kap, 39 § - Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 39). Specific admission requirements for doctoral studies in each subject are specified in the relevant general syllabus, to be found here.

Basis of assessment Admittance of a doctoral student is based on an assessment of the candidate's ability to benefit from third-cycle studies. The applicant's ability to benefit from the phd studies and research will be assessed with reference to the selection criteria stated in the relevant general syllabus for phd studies. The following will be considered: • Quality and content of previous written work, such as a master's thesis • Ability to participate actively in the department's research environment • Ability to perform independent work • Dissertation plan • Written and oral communication • Relevant educational background and grades/grade average • Relevant work experience

Other requirements Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is a requirement.

The Unit of Economic History is a research-intensive unit that employs about 15 persons, including professors, associate professors, senior lecturers, researchers, Ph.D. candidates and technical/ administrative staff. The Graduate studies in economic history at Umeå University are partly organized together with other economic history departments in Sweden. Research is regularly published in international peer reviewed journals. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are used. The Unit of Economic History has well developed research collaborations on local, national and international levels, reflecting strong international publication in the following research areas: business history, environmental and energy history, financial history, economic growth and structural change, political economy and agricultural history.
