Combined Veterinary Residency / PhD training position

A combined Residency/PhD training position is available at the University of Bern, Switzerland, to join our comprehensive animal pathology center.

Pathology is a central bridge between clinical veterinary disciplines and basic research. A thorough training in veterinary morphologic pathology and translational biomedical research offers many job opportunities and is an important step towards a career in science and academia.

Tasks

In the scope of this residency/PhD training position the successful candidate will focus on the training in morphological pathology of farm, companion, zoo and laboratory animals during the first 2 years. After this time, he/she will join one of the research groups at our institute. During this 3-4 years period the candidate will focus on biomedical research and finalize a PhD project under the premises of the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bern (www. gcb.unibe.ch). The combined program will afterwards be completed by a brief period within our diagnostic unit and intensive preparation for the board examination of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP). More information about the Institute of Animal Pathology and its training and research programs is available under www. itpa.vetsuisse.unibe.ch.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated student with a strong interest in pathology and molecular research to discover mechanisms of disease. The following qualifications are required: •graduate degree of a veterinary school (Master of Veterinary Medicine, DVM or equivalent), •collaborative mindset to foster our team approach in diagnostics, teaching and research, •strong interest in biomedical research, •fluency in English and a minimal level of German (B2) to join the diagnostic unit.

We offer an enthusiastic diagnostic team, an inspiring research environment, competitive research training in cancer therapy resistance, genome dynamics, or host-pathogen interaction, long-standing experience in the preparation for the ECVP board examination, and an attractive working location in Bern. Salaries are in accordance with the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) regulations.

This position is a 6 year appointment and will be filled upon identification of a suitable candidate.
