We conduct research and education in physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, industrial design engineering and didactics in mathematics and science education. We offer unique and world-leading research within the FSCN Research Centre and Sports Tech Research Centre.

The research group in Surface and Colloid Engineering at Mid Sweden University is part of the FSCN Research Centre and conducts research on properties of biopolymers and cellulose materials in composites and energy conversion. For example, we study design and utilization of cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerators to generate static electricity that can be used to power battery-free smart devices within the Internet-of-Things area. We are now looking for a PhD student to a project funded by the Swedish Research Council for fundamental research on the mechanisms, properties, and future applications of triboelectric cellulose.

Job description Graduate studies including (80–100 %) research and teaching as well as (0–20 %) administrative work.

You will work as a PhD student within the Neopulp project, and within the Fiber Mechanics research group, studying biofiber materials for particle filters. Particulate filters have many medical and industrial applications, and are often made from fossil-based synthetic fibers, but are also widely made from recyclable wood fibers. For natural fibers there are variations in shape and stiffness, which can also be controlled in the manufacturing process. In this doctoral work, you investigate the relationship between process, fiber properties, the microstructure of the filter and the function of the particle filter. The position includes both laboratory work and modeling, but the methods are adapted to personal strengths and interest.

Requirements and assessment To be considered for a PhD position, the applicant must meet the entry requirements for admission to Mid Sweden University´s third-cycle program. In order to meet the entry requirements the applicant must have a second-cycle degree, or have completed at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 credits should be second-cycle courses. An additional requirement is that 90 credits of the 240 total must consist of courses in Engineering Physics/Physics/Mechanical Engineering. The applicant is also eligible for consideration if s/he has acquired the corresponding knowledge in some other way.

Laboratory work or other practical experience in technology is meritorious. So is demonstrated skill in mathematical modeling or simulation, and communication skills, as demonstrated by, e.g., teaching experience or publication in peer-reviewed publications.

We are looking for an individual who is self-driven, creative, collaborative, and otherwise suitable for pursuing a doctorate. A short description of the applicant's visions and goals for the doctoral studies should be included. The applicant must have a strong command of the English language.
