Job description

We are looking for two motivated and excellent PhD candidates interested in researching Software Evolution: The Technical and Human Sides. One position will focus on technical aspects of evolving software, such as dependency management, change impact analysis, and program repair. The second position will focus on human aspects and their interrelations with evolving software, such as program comprehension or decay of architectural knowledge. While the topics of the two positions are focused on different aspects of software evolution, we envision collaboration between the two PhD candidates to benefit from each other's research.

The two PhD candidates will be working within the Software Engineering and Technology cluster. The PhD candidate studying the technical aspects of software evolution will be under the supervision of Dr. Lina Ochoa, while the one focusing on the human aspects will be supervised by Dr.-Ing. Jacob Krüger. We offer a collaborative work environment involving experienced researchers on software engineering across all academic levels, who will also act as co advisors. The positions offer candidates:

  • A 5 year fully funded PhD-TA contract (25% teaching).
  • To obtain a PhD degree in the area of Software Engineering.
  • To work within a well-established and collaborative research team.
  • To work on either technical or human aspects of software evolution, but with freedom to tune concrete topics with the supervisors.
  • Job requirements

To apply for the PhD-TA positions, you need to:

  • Ideally, have a very good Master degree in Computer Science, but related/relevant other disciplines with the needed background are also welcome to apply.
  • Have knowledge about contemporary Software Engineering and programming (e.g., attended respective courses, worked as a developer).
  • Be interested in and motivated to conduct research.
  • Be motivated to work in and contribute to an international team.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Background on software analysis, empirical methods, and/or social sciences is helpful.
  • Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. €2,770 max. €3,539).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self- aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
