EduTrust AI project
The primary objective of EduTrust AI is to develop research excellence in the area of Trustworthy AI in Education. Through an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE), Faculty of Psychology and the Faculty of Law, we 1) identify layers of trust associated with the use of AI in the educational sector that considers the complex accountability relationships (conceptual framework), 2) develop guidelines (educational, technological, and regulatory) for the appli-cation of AI in education to be adequately transparent, interpretable and accountable for various stakeholders, 3) develop targeted materials and tools for stakeholder groups for building and supporting trust in the use of AI in the educational sector, and 4) translate insights about legal, psychological and socio-cultural determinants of trust into legal requirements for the educational sector. Thus, EduTrust AI contributes scientific value and gives input to practicable frameworks related to the challenging questions around the use of student data and AI systems in education, relevant for the fields of law, information and computer science, learning sciences, and the social sciences. The project is funded by Trond Mohn Foundation.
As a PhD candidate affiliated with the Faculty of Law your main task will be to analyse and reserach relevant EU/EEA rules on privacy and data protection and AI as well as national regulation of education (for example opplæringslova (Act relating to Primary and Secondary Education and Training (the Education Act) and universitets- og høyskoleloven (Act relating to universities and university colleges). The question of whether the legal framework safeguards trustworthy AI in the education sector will be of key importance and, if necessary, in cooperation with other stakeholders in the project, you will propose regulatory changes at both EU/EEA and national level as called for by Personvernkommisjonen (The Noregian Privacy Commission NOU 2022: 11).
The project is based on a collaboration with the Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE), the Faculty of Psychology at the UiB, as well as with the Scientific Advisory Board in the project.
