Professor Olav Tirkkonen from Aalto University Department of Communications and Networking has been named an IEEE Fellow active from January 2023.

‘It is a great professional honor, second only to becoming elected to professor at the university. The recognition is for work that has spanned a couple of decades, made in part in the industry, and in close collaboration with industrial partners. I have been exceptionally lucky with the teams I’ve been member of, both in the industry and at the university. I want to thank all my colleagues and students for the fruitful collaborations over the years’, he says.

Professor Tirkkonen develops communications theory, mainly inspired by applications in wireless communications and cellular communication systems, shortly this means 4G, 5G, 6G, XG.

‘My special expertise is in physical layer baseband communications, which considers the problems on how to take bits and map them to wireless signals at a transmitter, and how to detect them at a receiver. I consider these problems in wireless environments where the communicating entities have multiple antennas, and there are multiple transmitters and receivers.’

With over 400,000 members, IEEE is the world’s largest association for technical professionals. The IEEE Fellowship is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed 0.1% of the total voting membership.
