Empa - the place where innovation starts
Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH
Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the
well-being of society.
The Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics is well known for its
innovative research in the field of inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid
thin-film photovoltaic and battery technologies. The Laboratory holds the
world record power conversion efficiency of flexible CIGS and all-perovskite
tandem solar cells. We are offering
Several PhD Positions on All-perovskite Multi-junction Solar Cells and Mini-
module on Flexible Substrates
We are looking for several highly motivated PhD students with a strong
experimental background in materials, chemistry, and physics to develop high-
efficiency and stable all-perovskite multi-junction solar cells and mini-
modules on flexible substrates. You will have the opportunity to be embedded
in a collaborative Horizon Europe research project. This will enable you to
interact and collaborate with leading European academic and industrial
partners.
Your responsibilities (will vary depending on different projects)
include:
Develop high-throughput combinatorial materials synthesis platforms using
thermal evaporation and/or thermal evaporation/slot-die coating method to
accelerate the discovery of novel perovskite compositions
Develop solution-processed (e.g., spin coating, slot-die coating) wide
bandgap (~ 1.8 eV) and narrow bandgap (~ 1.2 eV) perovskite absorbers
with both excellent optoelectronic properties and stability
Develop high throughput characterizations and in-situ/operando
characterizations using electrons, photons, X-rays, ions, etc. to
characterize the materials, layers, and devices (e.g., single-junction
and multi-junction perovskite solar cells), and interpretation of results
Layer deposition and device integration (e.g., single-junction and multi-
junction perov-skite solar cells) using various deposition techniques,
notably high-vacuum thermal evaporation, magnetron sputtering, atomic
layer deposition (ALD) and slot-die coating etc.
Conduct in-depth loss mechanisms analysis and use these insights to
further improve the performance of perovskite single-junction and multi-
junction solar cell and mini-modules
Develop and implement novel concepts, such as light management, new
materials and processing methods, novel tandem architectures, optical and
electrical simulation, etc., to understand and ultimately improve the
performance (both efficiency and stability) of flexible all-perovskite
tandem solar cells and mini-modules
Stability tests of single junction and multi-junction perovskite solar
cells and mini-modules
Dissemination of the results on meetings, reports, scientific journals and
at conferences
Maintenance of equipment in collaboration with the laboratory technician
Co-supervision of semester- or master students together with supervisor
Your profile:
Master degree in Material science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical
Engineering or related fields
Strong background in semiconductor technology
Strong experimental and analytic skills
Skills in programming/machine learning/CorelDraw are advantageous
Experience in the field of halide perovskite semiconductors is
advantageous
Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with colleagues and
superiors
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment toward a common goal
Good English skills are required and good German language skills is a plus
We offer an international, highly stimulating research environment with
excellent infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surroundings with plenty
of possibilities for personal and professional development. You will work on
important and promising solutions to the global energy problem in an
international environment. You will be working at Empa Dübendorf, near Zurich,
and enrolled at ETH Zurich.
The starting date is May 2023 or upon mutual agreement. The PhD project is
planned for 4 years.
