  • Université de technologie de Compiègne is seeking to fill a researcher position for the DuraLayer project, at its Department of Bioengineering - Biomechanics and Bioengineering (BMBI) Laboratory.

    This position would represent an initial professional experience for someone who has recently (< 4 years) obtained their PhD in a field relevant to the project.

    Substitutes of dura mater (half-rigid membrane located between bone and nervous system) used in case of substance loss or for post-op wound healing can still lead to complications. Our team aims at developing new biomaterials mimicking the multiphasic structure of native dura mater to face this challenge, thanks to phases and interphases with refined, specific biomechanical properties. Electrospinning of natural and synthetic polymer solutions will enable the development of fibre networks with properties similar to the dural extracellular matrix. Phases with relevant biomechanical properties promoting respectively osteointegration, watertightness or wound healing will be developed then combined to be used as implantable materials or coating on medical devices.


    The post-doctoral research assistant will therefore work on the development and characterization of multiphasic materials produced by electrospinning for healthcare applications. The project will involve the use of both commercial and homemade electrospinning devices, the development of new composite biomaterials and their physico-chemical characterization, and the combinations of the different phases. The project will then rapidly focus on the culture of human stem cells and dural cells on these scaffolds, and the characterization of their biological properties (proliferation, viability, differentiation). In vivo testing is considered in case of significant progresses.

    Principal activities

  • Set-up of electrospinning devices for the fabrication of multiphasic structures.
  • Characterization (viscosity, elasticity, wettability, watertightness, alignment, degradability, rugosity…) and optimisation of polymer solutions and fibre networks.
  • Use of the biomaterials as scaffolds for human cell culture (stem cells, dural fibroblasts and their co-culture) and study of biocompatibility and cell functionality.
  • Design and possibly achievement of in vivo proof-of-concept in a rodent model.
  • Set-up and writing of experimental protocols.
  • Supervision of interns and PhD students.
  • Writing of scientific publications, oral presentation in congresses.

  • Set-up and use of electrospinning devices.
  • Development and characterization of polymeric (bio)materials, in particular local and global mechanical properties.

  • A first experience with adipose-derived stem cells, dural cells and/or with silk fibroin-based materials (including fibroin extraction) would be an important asset.
  • A first experience in animal testing (rodent model) would be an interesting asset.
  • Interest for research projects at the interface between different fields.
  • Other skills: project management, rigorous experimental design, fluent in French and/or English, good writing skills in particular for experimental reports and publications, anticipation and adaptation skills, team spirit.
