Researcher 1109 in organelle biologyThere is a vacancy for a position as researcher in organelle biology hosted at the Department of Mathematics with an experimental presence at UiB's biological laboratories. The position is for a period of about 1 year with an end date of 30.06.2024, and is associated with the EU-funded project “EvoConBiO”.
About the project/work tasksBioenergetic organelles (mitochondria and chloroplasts) power complex life, but many important questions remain open about how they are controlled and inherited. These organelles exist in populations inside cells, carry their own genetic material, and move with rich collective dynamics. Maintaining these coupled physical and genetic populations is of central importance to human health, crop production, and countless other biological processes, but many aspects of this maintenance remain poorly understood.
This project will involve experimental and computational characterisation of the “social networks” of dynamic organelle populations in the cells of different photosynthetic species using live-cell microscopy. We will also explore how chemical and genetic interventions, potentially including the transformation of chloroplast DNA, influence the physical behaviour and environmental responses of these cellular populations. You can read about some recent results here: 10.1016/j.molp.2018.11.002 ; doi.org/10.1016/j.cels.2021.04.006
The position is within our larger project “EvoConBiO” (evolution and control of bioenergetic organelles) with a diverse team using interdisciplinary approaches to explore cell and evolutionary biology.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position:
The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at JobbNorge
