  • The study proposed in this internship concerns the combustion of ammonia (NH3) to reduce the carbon footprint of heat production. Ammonia has many advantages. It is a non-carbon fuel, with a good energy density and it is easy to transport and store. It can be produced with green energy resources, especially in times of excess. However, it is difficult to burn it because of a low calorific value, low flame speed, high ignition temperature and low flammability limits. The flame is likely unstable, and subjected to blow-off, especially in turbulent conditions. To overcome these difficulties, the study proposes to investigate certain parameters, such as the burner geometry (use of swirl, radial injection), the oxygen enrichment and the velocities of reactants. Flames of pure ammonia and/or mixed with methane will be tested and analyzed in terms of stability, topology and pollutant emissions, especially NOX and CO.


    The internship will take place at ICARE laboratory, in Orléans France. The work includes the following tasks:

  • Bibliographic study on NH3 combustion
  • Handling and testing of the combustion system
  • Study of flame stability at different operating conditions
  • Visualization of flame by chemiluminescence on OH (or NH/ CH)
  • Measurements and analyzes of pollutant emissions (NOX, CO)

    Candidate profile

    Applicants could be in Master 2 or Engineer student 5A in Mechanical Engineering/Applied physics. Skills in combustion and/or fluid mechanics are necessary. Experience in conducting experiments in combustion is appreciated.
