Offer Description

A Research Fellowship (BI) ( Reference REQUIMTE 2023-36 ) on the project “BioFirEx- A panel of (bio)markers for the surveillance of firefighter's health and safety”, reference PCIF/SSO/0017/2018, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. /MCTES through national funds by FCT / MCTES, is available at REQUIMTE under the following conditions:

Scientific area: Chemistry and related scientific areas

Admission requirements: The applicant must have completed a Master degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Public Health, Occupational Health, or related scientific fields. The applicant must be enrolled or will enroll in a Doctorate Program or in a non-academic degree Course integrated in the educational project of a Higher Education Institution in collaboration with an R&D unit; if the applicant is not yet enrolled, she/he must meet the requirements to register; enrolment will only be mandatory and proof necessary at the moment of scholarship contracting.

It is essential that the applicant has immediate availability and be independent in written and spoken English.

Work Plan: This project aims to i) use a multidisciplinary approach to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the occupational exposure of firefighters to pollutants generated during forest fires, ii) assess the impacts on health and safety and iii) as ultimate goals, identify a set of (bio)markers appropriate for the surveillance of occupational exposure and the health and safety of firefighters, as well as establishing a list of recommendations and good practices. The researcher will be involved in (1) determining pollutant levels and exposure biomarker levels in several type of samples through various sample preparation, spectrophotometric and chromatographic methodologies; (2) Data treament, statistical analysis and health risks assessment; and (3) elaboration of scientific articles.

Work Place : The work will be conducted at REQUIMTE (Rede de Química e Tecnologia) - Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde nas instalações do GRAQ/ICETA - Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, under the supervision of Doutora Simone Barreira Morais.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have duration of 4 months, starting on 15th July 2023.

Monthly stipend: Monthly stipend is €1.199,64 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https: // www. fct.pt/wp- content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM2023.pdf). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

Selection criteria: The selection criteria will be the following:

i) 50% for the scientific area of training and respective classifications converted to the national scale (0 to 20 points);

ii) 50% for research experience in the associated scientific area, namely in a) Human biomonitoring and public or occupational health; b) Analytical techniques, in particular liquid chromatography, for determination of pollutants in environmental and/or biological samples; c) Atmospheric pollution.

The three best candidates selected in the first series will be asked to conduct an interview, face to face or through an online platform and, then, classified with a weighting of 50% (first ranking) and 50% (interview ranking). The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.

Composition of the Selection Jury: Doutora Simone Barreira Morais (president of the selection jury), Doutora Marta Madalena Oliveira (vowel) and Doutora Klara Slezakova (vowel), Doutora Cristina Maria Fernandes Delerue Alvim de Matos (substitute vowel).

Publicity and communication of results: The ranking of applications will be published at a visible and public area of REQUIMTE facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.
