The Terahertz Devices and Systems Laboratory at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, TU Darmstadt, offers a position as

Research Assistant (PhD position) (all genders)

initially for a period of 33 months with a planned start date of 01.01.2023 as part of the BMBF project "High Speed Room Temperature Terahertz Devices for Beam Alignment and Diagnostics" (HisTeD).

The subject of the research activities are (i) rectifying field-effect transistors and (ii) photoconducting detectors based on ErAs:In(Al)GaAs for high temporal resolution of THz and infrared pulses, in particular generated by free electron lasers (100 GHz-30 THz) as well as beam diagnostics. These photoconductors are illuminated with a short-pulse (telecom) laser signal. This modulates the conductivity of the material. In addition to the laser signal, a THz (or IR) signal is coupled by means of an antenna attached to the component, which biases the photoconductor with an alternating voltage in the THz range. This results in mixing of the optical and THz signals, which provides a low-frequency component proportional to the THz field strength. The work will be carried out together with an experienced post-doctoral researcher. It is planned that the post-doctoral researcher will focus on the development of field-effect transistors and that the advertised position will take over the development of the photoconductors. However, this can also be exchanged. In general, good cooperation is required, as, for example, joint measurement shifts must be carried out at large-scale research facilities. Another PhD student at the TH Mittelhessen will support the consortium with the development of Schottky diodes. The project requires the design of the components and the antenna structures, processing of the components in a semiconductor clean room, integration of the processed components with electronics and optics, the measurement of the structures with various methods, especially in THz and IR operation, applications of the components, especially at accelerator facilities, as well as writing of conference papers and journal articles. The work is carried out in a team with other doctoral students/postdocs as well as external research groups in a friendly, international research atmosphere.

The applicant shall fulfill the following requirements:

  • An excellent degree in one of the following subjects is a prerequisite: Physics or Electrical Engineering (electrical engineering preferred)
  • The first master or diploma degree shall not be older than four years
  • The applicant shall have knowledge/experience in at least two of the following topics:

  • Semiconductor physics
  • Experience with lasers and fiber optics
  • Terahertz
  • Clean room experience
  • Rectifying field-effect transistors
