at the Department of Geological Sciences. Closing date: 15 June 2023. Stockholm University is a leading European university in one of the world's most dynamic capitals. The University has more than 29 000 students, 1 400 doctoral students and 5 700 staff members active within the natural sciences and humanities.

The Department of Geological Sciences is a department within the Faculty of Science with courses at master's, bachelor's and orientation levels. The department supports a broad range of basic research within marine geology, geochemistry and classical geology.

Project description The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO-Seabed 2030 project started in 2017 during the UN Ocean Conference in New York with the goal that all the world's oceans should be mapped by the year 2030 (https: // seabed2030.org/). As of today, approx. 25% has been mapped, which means that there are huge areas of the world's oceans where the bottom topography is not known! Four regional centers started, each of which handles the depth data compilation within an assigned part of the world's oceans. At the Department of Geological Sciences, we are responsible for compiling depth data from the Arctic Ocean. Depth data comes to us in various formats and quality. These data need to be reviewed and processed before being incorporated into the global depth model that Seabed 2030 produces for GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean: (www. gebco.net/). The depth model is in the form of a digital grid. It is used by tens of thousands around the world, including for map production in GIS (Geographic Information System), basis in various types of numerical models, and in Google Earth and Google Maps.

Main responsibilities The tasks will mostly consist of digital processing of depth data with specific software (Caris, Qimera, QGIS and Python). This also includes troubleshooting depth data. You must be able to work independently as well as in a group, and against deadlines as the project will have specific milestones. You should speak and write English fluently as summarizing the results in reports may occur.

Qualifications The academic requirements for application are a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a natural science subject, which involves knowledge of GIS and digital data management. Geoscientific knowledge of the seabed and geophysical bottom mapping is an advantage, as well as experience working with depth data, e.g., processing of multibeam data, and skills in script programming.

Selection The selection is based on how well the applicant is found to be able to complete the task. Particular emphasis is placed on the applicant's relevant knowledge and skills for the tasks, creativity, initiative, independence and ability to work together with other researchers. The evaluation is based on previous education and experience, ambition, the letter of motivation, and possible interviews. Great emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities.

Terms of employment The position involves full-time temporary employment from 2023-09-04 (or as per agreement) until2024-04-30 with the possibility of extension.
