Your tasks

The person will assist Professor Murmann in research, teaching, and company projects.

Doing leading-edge research according to international standards

Writing of scientific publications and participation in international conferences

Candidates for this position are expected to enroll in the PhD program in Management at the University of St. Gallen, with the doctoral supervisor being Prof. J. Peter Murmann.

Your profile

Outstanding Master's degree from a leading university or business school

Intellectually curious and interested in thinking about complex ideas

Strong interest in the research topic of strategic forecasting and heuristic decision making

Demonstrated ability to write scientifically or for other forms of publication

Demonstrated aptitude to work on analytical problems

Stays self-organized and can manage multiple projects simultaneously

Pays strong attention to detail

Demonstrates a proactive, hands-on mentality attitude towards work and asks questions early

Comfortable working in a team environment

Has strong statistical skills

Research experience

Communicates fluently in German and English

Professor Murmann, who has spent 20 years in the USA and 12 years in Asia Pacific and has a strong network of collaborators across top universities around the world, has embarked on an exciting new research project that has the promise to both make a fundamental contribution to science as well as to be highly practical and help companies improve their strategic abilities. Building on earlier work in scenario planning, the project has two themes: It seeks to improve the strategic forecasting skills of individuals and groups in organizations and examine ways how individuals and groups can improve their forecasting skills regarding major environmental trends that will affect the company's business. Second, it aims to develop so-called frugal heuristics for making decisions. This topic sits at the intersection of strategy, psychology, economics, and statistics. The research associate would join the project team.
