  • 2 - Position description

    The Faculty of Engineering , Department Elektronica en informatica , is looking for a part-time professor.

    More concretely your work package contains:

    Education and Research domain:

  • Plenoptic Signal Processing
  • Education tasks:

  • You will teach in the master's programmes Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Computer Science and Industrial Sciences Electronics-ICT.
  • The language of instruction is both Dutch and English.
  • Master courses cover the following areas: digital signal processing, computer vision, plenoptic imaging and signal processing, optics and photonics, nano and optoelectronics.
  • At a later stage, Bachelor courses taught in Dutch may be added to your teaching portfolio in disciplines related to the above-mentioned teaching domains.
  • You will also supervise internships, master theses in close collaboration with partners.
  • Research tasks:

  • You will be part of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science (ETRO), and more specifically the research group Multidimensional Signal Processing and Communication (IRIS).
  • The aim is that you build up a structural collaboration within this group in the field of holographic signal processing and imaging.
  • Your research will mainly focus on the following subdomains:
  • Digital representation and coding of holographic signals;
  • Holographic imaging, processing and visualisation;
  • Underlying opto-electronics and photonics technology;
  • Efficient implementation of developed signal processing algorithms.
  • Application areas include but are not limited to AR/VR/XR imaging and visualisation, computer-generated holography, interferometry, microscopy & tomography, and holographic printing.
  • You will also collaborate within a national and international context (including ISO/IEC standardisation), discover and explore other industrial applications, and design effective solutions.
  • You will collaborate with other research institutes (in particular imec), industrial partners and other universities.
  • You will facilitate these interactions and write joint projects, manage these projects and report the research results adequately.
  • You will (co-)promote doctoral theses.
  • Other tasks:

  • You will take responsibility within the faculty and (possibly) the university governing bodies.
  • You conduct promotion in an active way for the educational programmes and the department

    For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base.

    3 - Profile

    What do we expect from you?

    You hold a master's degree Engineering Sciences in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and a PhD in Engineering Sciences.

  • You can convey knowledge in an inspiring way so that it fits seamlessly with (the level of) knowledge of the audience.
  • You have thorough knowledge of:
  • Image processing and computer vision;
  • Plenoptic signal processing and imaging, in particular holographic image processing;
  • Optics and photonics in the context of imaging.
  • You have the capacity to design and supervise research and innovation projects.
  • You have a practical problem-solving attitude and excellent collaboration skills.
  • You are required to present the required CERF level 'C1' language certificate for knowledge of Dutch and English, or you have have successfully completed previous education in the languages mentioned.

  • Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a teaching session.

  • Language regulations:

  • A member of the academic staff who is entrusted with a teaching assignment must also be able to demonstrate that the language of instruction is known at ERK level C1 through a qualification certificate or through an adequate diploma. The VUB also provides courses in, for example, academic English.

    The administrative language of the VUB is Dutch. In case of insufficient knowledge of Dutch, the VUB will provide an integration course. After a maximum of five years, a member of the academic staff must demonstrate adequate knowledge of the administrative language (ERK level B2).

    4 - Offer

    Are you going to be our new colleague?

    You'll be offered an appointment as professor , for an assignment of 0.2 FTE , for 3 years (renewable, on condition of the positive evaluation of the activities), with planned starting date 01/10/2023.

    You'll receive a salary linked to one of the scales set by the government.
