Professor in 'Nano-Opto-Electronics'
Category: Academic Staff & Researchers
1 - Working at the VUB
For already 50 years, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel has stood for
freedom, equality and connectedness. These values are strongly present on our
campuses, in our students as well as our staff. At the VUB, you'll find a
diverse collection of personalities: pure innovators and especially people
who are 100% their authentic selves. With about 3.500 employees , we are
the largest Dutch-speaking employer in Brussels , an international city
with which we are all too happy to be connected, and around which our four
campuses are located.
Our education and research are grounded in the principles of free research
with an eye on human progress. We disapprove of every purely authoritative
argument and guarantee the free formation of judgement that is necessary for
this basic principle to be incorporated in the community.
The VUB is autonomous and managed democratically. As such, we guarantee
fundamental freedoms within our university, as well as the right of the
university community to be involved in making and checking university policy.
The mission of the university includes:
the development, the transfer and the application of high-standing
academic education and scientific research, free from any prejudice;
community integration of this in a spirit of social compassion;
critical development of everyone in light of the responsibilities borne in
the community.

You must take care of education and teaching within the domain of
(nano-) electronics at Master level. In a later stage (after 5 years)
also teaching at Ba level in Dutch will be part of the educational task:
You contribute to Bachelor courses to be taught in Dutch in disciplines
related to semiconductor physics, electronic and opto-electronic devices,
including inspiring lab sessions to trigger the interests of students in
practical measurement techniques.
You contribute to master courses taught in English and which cover the
following topics: advanced semiconductor device physics for nano-and
optoelectronic devices; semiconductor device manufacturing and processing
technologies and TCAD simulation tools.
You will contribute to courses in the Bachelor program of Engineering and
the Master programs of Photonic and Electrical Engineering. The courses in
the Bachelor program are taught in Dutch; these of the Master programs are
taught in English.
You will supervise master theses and internships in collaboration with our
institutional and industrial partners.
Research tasks:
You conduct research within the department of Electronics and Informatics
(ETRO). The department has an internationally renowned track record, in
nano-and opto-electronics, multi-modal sensor design, data capturing,
embedded systems and IoT/computer networks and communication to advanced
multi-dimensional signal and image processing, data representation and
visualization techniques, and physical and computational analysis, machine
learning theory and algorithms for explainable A.I. and data mining.
The R&D activities of ETRO cover fundamental and strategic basic research
and these activities are recognized at university-wide level with funding
coming from multiple strategic research programs (SRPs). Due to its
longstanding expertise, ETRO is also recognized as a group of excellence
of applied research (GEAR). This has led to eight successful spin-off
initiatives.
In terms of research and innovation activities, you will inspire and
oversee the research on nano- and optoelectronics, which requires:
You have in-depth expertise in advanced semiconductor physics and nano-and optoelectronic devices.
You have in-depth knowledge of fabrication technologies for advanced III-V and III-N semiconductor devices.
You have in-depth knowledge in nano- and optoelectronic design-technology and TCAD.
You will be (co)promoter of PhD students.
Other tasks:
You actively promote the educational programs and the department.
Finally, you are prepared to have a bridging function with third parties:
universities, research institutes and companies, and you have a strong
