YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • You are part of the research team of the project MiCoS and investigate microplastic pollution in agricultural soils in Flanders and the Netherlands and study the effect of the current pollution on soil and plant health
  • You are the first contact person for farmers and are responsible for sampling of 240 agricultural soils. For each field, you look into the degree of microplastic pollution, the soil physicochemical parameters and soil microbiology
  • You develop within the project MiCoS a microscopic method to measure microplastic pollution in soils. This will be done in collaboration with the Research institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO). Therefore, on a regular base you will work at one of the ILVO buildings for sampling, measurements and meetings together with the research team.
  • You correlate microplastic pollution data with soil parameters, soil microbiology and environmental variables.
  • WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma) preferably in biochemistry/biotechnology or bioscience engineering.
  • You are an expert in soil research, soil health and/or soil microbiology
  • You have experience with microscopy either throughout your study, former job and/or PhD research
  • Preferably, you have experience in modelling or you are willing to specialize in modelling during the first two years of the project
  • You have experience in bioinformatics and can work fluently with R and a linux/unix environment
  • You have strong communication skills and have a proven track record for this (e.g. experience in citizen science projects, leading position in a project, …)
  • You are willing to go abroad (The Netherlands/Luxembourg) for short periods (1 day up to 1 week) for sampling and meetings;
  • WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 4 years
  • Your contract will start on 1/05/2023 at the earliest.
