  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • Research activities include performing research, counselling doctoral researchers and master students within the concerned projects, project management and reporting, dissemination in high quality journals and conferences, identifying opportunities and active acquisition of funding for follow-up research projects.
  • Research activities will primarily be oriented towards the numerical simulation of hydrogen assisted cracking in welded steel connections. This comprises the development of a continuum damage material model that provides a coupled description of hydrogen uptake, hydrogen diffusion, material degradation in presence of hydrogen and crack initiation/growth upon mechanical loading. Both ductile and brittle damage mechanisms are envisaged.
  • Additionally, experimental validation of the developed model on the basis of hydrogen charged mechanical testing is also foreseen, in collaboration with ongoing PhD projects and industrial partners. It will be your responsibility to manage the experimental activities in close communication with all involved partners (internal and external).
  • Additional to academic research, you will be involved in the supervision of industrial service activities, and in teaching tasks related to fatigue and fracture of machine components, joints and structures.

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate in Mechanical or Materials engineering.
  • experience in programming, primarily for finite element simulation (particularly: damage modelling) and data analysis is a prerequisite;
  • you can demonstrate your expertise (based on high-quality scientific dissemination) in numerical and experimental work, in the fields of fracture of metallic components/joints/structures;
  • you have experience with the acquisition of research funds;
  • you possess structured and creative problem-solving abilities;
  • you possess strong analytical and technical skills and take responsibility for the development of your work;
  • you can work independently as well as in a team, and can showcase your abilities to manage activities involving teamwork;
  • you have excellent English communication skills (written and presentation);
  • knowledge of Dutch is a clear plus.

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration with a maximum term of 2 years.
  • Your contract will start on 01/03/2023 at the earliest.
