  • The PhD proposal is part of a European Project ECI entitled “Scaling-up SuperLubricity into Persistence (SSLiP)”. Indeed, as an estimation, 25% of world energy consumption and 75% of mechanical failure is due to friction, the resisting force of relative motion between contacting surfaces. Therefore, reducing friction will have enormous economic impact. Superlubricity regime refers to friction coefficient below 1% under boundary conditions (typically low speed/high pressure). Today, such performances can only be obtained thanks to complex tribochemical reactions between the lubricant and substrates, generating 2-D materials formed on the worn surfaces. The main drawback is the high friction observed during the induction period, before chemical reactions occur. In this project, we adopt a more “structural” approach using 2-D layers previously deposited on the surfaces prior to friction (namely graphene layers) and also the deposition of such layers not only on the substrate surfaces but also on colloidal particles introduced in the contact zone with the lubricant. We think that this approach can avoid the high friction period encountered with traditional lubricants.

    PhD candidate will be in charge of the tribological study of the textured and functionalized surfaces provided by our partners in the frame of the SSLiP project. Various tribometers will be used to measure friction coefficient and surface characterization will be performed on worn surfaces via spectroscopic techniques (XPS, EDS, REELS etc.) and nanoscale imaging (TEM, AFM). This study has also an interest in the ability to rejuvenate superlubricious conditions while overcoming degradation and forming the basis for persistence at various scales and in various environments (from single colloids in UHV up to lubricants with tribocolloids). This PhD work is predominantly experimental but it will be combined with numerical works realized by other partners of SSLiP project.

    PhD candidate will be integrated in the SSLiP project. Playing a role in managing collaborations with the various project partners would be highly appreciated. He/she will be involved in the Laboratory life, participating to international congress and publications on the subject.

    Skills/Qualifications Ideal candidate should have a good background in surface science and

    physical chemistry. Some experience with some surface characterization techniques and knowledge tribology would be greatly appreciated.

    It would be appreciated if he/she could have an experience/interest in

    managing multi-partners project.
