New PhD opportunities in Energy Transition at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Flows in University of Cambridge
A new suite of fully funded PhD projects (at UK studentship rates, and on a UK fees basis) are open for students interested in the science of energy transition Including the important problem of energy storage. Topics for the PhD projects include
(A) Hydrogen storage in subsurface geological systems, including salt caverns and aquifers - this project will involve analogue experiments and some simple theoretical modelling to understand the fate of hydrogen once pumped into the subsurface;
(B) increasing the rate of generation of bubbles in electrolysers through flow of the electrolyte within the electrolysis cell, which will involve both experimental and theoretical modelling;
(C) modelling the injection and reaction of CO2 into basaltic formations, to develop quantitative models of the 'Carbfix' type process and to develop models of the potential effectiveness of such systems, drawing from the recent experiments and data collected in Iceland;
(D) Developing control systems for improving the efficiency of heating systems, especially in large residential buildings, such as in a University setting.
(E) Running a series of field experiments with accompanying models to understand the controls on drainage systems in the Fens, and for developing strategies for managing these systems.
More details are available on the IEEF website. To apply, please submit an application to the Post Graduate Admissions Office, listing PhD in Earth Sciences. We are especially interested in candidates with 1st or 2.1 degrees in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or Earth Sciences, who have an interest in modelling and experimental research.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3.5 years in the first instance.
