The Institute of Philosophy is seeking a Doctoral researcher to work on the research project A public policy and ethical analysis of the debate on research with animals in Switzerland.

The research project examines the ethical arguments used in the societal debate and by different stakeholder groups on research with animals and 3R. In addition, it aims to critically assess the 3R approach and to develop a more granular ethical framework to guide research with animals. The project is financed by the SNSF National Research Programme 79 “Advancing 3R” and is implemented by the Ethics and Policy Lab of the Multidisciplinary Center for Infectious Diseases (MCID). The doctoral researcher will collaborate with another doctoral researcher, who will analyse the public discourse from policy perspective. Please find more information on the project under the following link. The PhD position is funded for four years and can start July 1st or by arrangement.

Tasks

  • Conduct empirical research (media analysis, stakeholder mapping and interviews) and normative analyses on ethical arguments used in the public debate on research with animals using argumentative analysis and reflective equilibrium
  • Publish in international scientific journals and present at national and international conferences
  • Organise and engage in public outreach events to disseminate research results and foster high quality public debate
  • Collaboration in the Ethics and Policy Lab and MCID
  • Requirements

  • Excellent Master's degree in bioethics, philosophy, medicine, veterinary medicine, sociology, public health or a related discipline which is relevant to the project
  • Very good knowledge of empirical research methods
  • Knowledge of argumentative analysis and normative assessments employing a formal model of reflective equilibrium is an advantage
  • Very good knowledge of German and English, written and spoken
  • Team-orientation, commitment, capability to work independently
