Epitaxial growth and spin-resolved band structure characterization of 2D semiconductors
The group of Prof. Alexander Grüneis starts from November 2022 at the
Institute for Solid State Electronics of TU Wien and works on novel 2D semiconductors. The
large spin-orbit coupling in several 2D semiconductors and the lack of an
inversion center in the unit cell result in spin-polarized electron energy bands.
Such a band structure is interesting for new concepts in electronics (e.g.
valleytronics or spintronics) and may be modified upon interaction with a 2D
ferromagnet. One of the strongest experimental methods to probe these
interactions directly is spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
In the course PhD thesis that is offered here, we would like to build up and
operate an ultra-high vacuum system that can be used to grow and to
characterize 2D semiconductor-ferromagnet interfaces. The PhD work involves
participation in the re-assembly of a working spin-ARPES system and requires
some basic knowledge in semiconductor physics, an interest to learn UHV
techniques and computer programming.
