Subjects Laser Dynamics Description The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.
WIAS invites applications for a PhD student position (f/m/d) (Ref. 22/45) In the research group Laser Dynamics (Head: PD Dr. Uwe Bandelow) starting at the earliest possible date.
The work tasks include: • Investigation of nonlinear effects in optical fibers: derivation of the model equations, studies on modulation instability, ultrashort pulses, optical turbulence, and extreme waves. • Implementation and application of numerical methods suited for the solution of the model equations, such as split-step Fourier methods. • Support of a collaboration between WIAS and the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science at the University of Sydney. • Presentation of the results on national and international conferences as well as publication in scientific journals.
We are looking for: candidates with • A completed scientific university education in the field of physics or mathematics with good grades • Ability to work on a theoretical project. Experience with Maxwell equations, nonlinear Schrödinger equation, modeling of optical systems, or nonlinear dynamics is an advantage • Experience with models based on partial differential equations and their numerical treatment. Provable knowledge of, e.g., Matlab, Python, C/C++, Mathematica is an advantage. • Good English and communications skills.

The appointment is for 36 months. The reduced work schedule is 29,25 hours per week, and the salary is according to the German TVoeD Bund scale.
