PhD student (m/f/d) Project Coral Chronobiology

Background The Marine Conservation group of Dr. Iliana Baums at HIFMB (www. baumslab.org) in collaboration with the Chronobiology group of Dr. Kristin Tessmar-Raible at AWI/UOL (https: // uol.de/marine-chronobiologie) and the chemical ecology group of Dr Peter Schupp at UOL (https: // uol.de/peter- schupp) is looking for a PhD student to study the molecular foundations of light sensing in reef-building corals. Light sensing of the animal host plays a role in growth regulation and synchronization of reproductive processes, as well as regulating intra-cellular algal symbionts.

Tasks You will conduct experiments to discover the molecular bases responsible for light sensing and organismal interpretation in the coral animal. Responsibilities include organizing and conducting experiments on cultured and field-collected corals under different light regimes, using physiological (growth, reproduction), as well as molecular diagnostics (RNASeq, HCR in situ stainings) as read outs. The work will also include attempts of functional molecular interference (Cas9/Crispr).

Requirements

  • A master's degree (equivalent to a Diplom) in marine biology or molecular ecology or related fields
  • Experience with aquarium experiments on corals and SCUBA certification
  • You will be proficient in using molecular and bioinformatic tools to produce and analyze gene expression and genomic data
