PhD student in Social Anthropology with a focus on marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea The Department of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University is seeking candidates for a PhD position in the newly started research project The Environmental Afterlife of the Suez Canal: Marine Species Transformation and Biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea. The project focuses on changing social and ecological environments in the Mediterranean propelled by marine species migration through the Suez Canal. It explores this through the prism of imperial afterlives, more-than-human studies and marine anthropology.
The PhD student will be working with PI Karin Ahlberg, but is expected to formulate an independent case study within the framework of the project. The research project is linked to the program BIOrdinary and the PhD student will be part of BIOrdinary's research team and activities.
The application deadline is March 24, 2023. Short-listed candidates may be called to an interview. Final decisions will be made by early June and the starting date is August 28, 2023.
Qualification requirements In order to meet the general entry requirements , the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
In order to meet the specific entry requirements , the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Social Anthropology stipulates that applicants must have completed courses equivalent to at least 120 credits in Social Anthropology or a comparable subject, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle. At least 15 credits in the second cycle must constitute a thesis project.
The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
Selection The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity:

Terms of employment Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.
The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The starting salary is currently 28 000 SEK per month.
Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
